"Joseph Tawadros is a magnetic presence, shredding on the oud like a Paganini, an Eddie Van Halen. His mastery of the instrument is palpable." — Limelight magazine
"One of the most impressive musicians to emerge in Australia — with a dazzling technique dispensing hair-raising tempos and a real depth of emotion." — The Australian ★★★★★

Joseph Tawadros AM is a leading Oud virtuoso, composer, 8-time ARIA-award winner and AIR Award winner, born in Cairo, raised in Sydney and now based in London. His instrument is the Oud, an Arabic lute, the ancestor of the lute and modern guitar.

A virtuoso of diversity and sensitivity, Joseph performs in concert halls worldwide, known for his brilliant technique, deep musicianship, storytelling and joyous style of performance. Joseph's drive to push musical boundaries has inspired collaborations with diverse performers and a solid repertoire of innovative, original music. He performs live as a soloist, in duo with his brother James on Egyptian percussion, with his jazz quartet, and with chamber and symphony orchestras all over the world.

Joseph has performed his own works with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne, West Australian and Adelaide Symphony, The Brodsky Quartet, National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine, Camerata Salzburg, the Morphing Chamber Orchestra and the Britten Symphonia. His Concerto for Oud & Orchestra with the Sydney Symphony was performed and released by ABC Classics, Australia in 2019. He is the only Australian composer to be performed by the Academy of Ancient Music in the United Kingdom.

He has recorded his music with many jazz luminaries such as John Abercrombie, Jack de Johnette, Roy Ayers, John Patitucci, Bela Fleck, Mike Stern, Joey DeFrancesco, Richard Bona, Fathy Salama and Christian McBride. Classical collaborations include Richard Tognetti, William Barton, The Grigoryan Brothers, Christian Lindberg, Gurrumul, and James Crabb. His songs have been performed and recorded by The Song Company and counter-tenor Andreas Scholl.

His oud can also be heard in films and TV such as Ali's Wedding, The Last Days of Yasser Arafat, Paper Giants; the birth of Cleo, I Remember 1948, The Water Diviner, Checkpoint, The Tentmakers of Cairo, All About E, Love Marriage in Kabul, The Portal, Haneen, The Black Balloon, The Transfer, Memory Film; a Filmmaker's Diary, House of Cards and The Last Ride starring Hugo Weaving.

2023 highlights include performing at the opening of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and the premiere of his new work 'The Three Stages of Hindsight' with the prestigious Britten Sinfonia. He was one of the 50 Australian composers to be chosen to write a fanfare celebrating the Sydney Opera House's 50th birthday. Finishing off the year Tawadros performed a record breaking 25 hours of continuous oud playing at the Kings College Chapel in London, raising £25,000 for charity.

2024 was also busy with a tour of America, Australia and Hong Kong performing Vivaldi's Four Seasons as well as his own compositions with the Australian Chamber Orchestra; and a Canadian debut as a soloist with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal conducted by Maestro Rafael Payare, performing in front of 15,000 people at the Montréal Olympic Stadium.

2025 was a huge year, with 4 international tours including performances in the United Kingdom, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Spain, Austria, Sweden and Australia, and the release of The Forgotten Path to Humanity, his 22nd Album. A highlight of 2025 was the award of an Honorary Doctorate in Music from the University of New South Wales, being only one of four musicians to receive the honour from this prestigious Australian university.

Joseph was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for services to music in 2016. He was inducted to the Australian National Film and Sound Archive in 2024, awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the Australian Institute of Music in 2013 and awarded the NSW Premier's Medal for Arts and Culture in 2014.

Rhythms Magazine
"Still in his early forties, Joseph Tawadros, Australia's London-based master of the Arabic lute (oud), has already long surpassed all superlatives. Incredibly, this is his 22nd consecutive album release in as many years — and most of the predecessors have netted well-merited ARIA pyramids. Suffice to say, the maestro's latest waxing is a classy addition to an unparalleled back catalogue, one in which his exquisite creations are deftly enhanced by a handpan player and percussionist (Elyar Pashang) and an equally dexterous violinist/vocalist (Layth Sidiq). Not surprisingly, given tragic recent events in the Middle East and elsewhere, some of Tawadros's latest 21 compositions, which range from 1:50 to nearly 6-minutes in duration, evoke a sense of sadness and deep reflection, as well as radiating exquisite beauty. It's a thought-provoking record that reveals new treasures with every spin."

"A minimalist trio in timeless meditation - oud, violin and handpan in close communion, like a journey through ancient landscapes, rich in emotion. Tawadros frames the oud not as a revivalist symbol but as a universal voice, a melodic wanderer and emotional conduit. The violin of Layth Sidiq complements it with lyrical phrasing rooted in Arabic tradition, while Elyar Pashang's handpan offers minimalist pulses that feel both ancient and hypnotically modern."

"On the one hand, the dozen-odd virtuosos gave us Vivaldi—but a totally different sound... Original Tawadros pieces like Kindred Spirits and Permission to Evaporate showcased how a master of the oud could gracefully push a strict Baroque warhorse into a vibrant, living cross-cultural dialogue."

"The performance was dynamic, engaging – Tawadros sitting cross-legged, almost cradling the instrument whilst the Britten Sinfonia stood to play, virtually dancing with the music... "A very different east-west encounter came before the interval when the orchestra were joined by the Egyptian-Australian oud virtuoso and composer Joseph Tawadros for three of his own works, including the world premiere of his concerto Three Stages of Hindsight. This is a terrific piece that plays fast and loose with harmonic convention as western keys morph back and forth into Arabic modes over three classically structured albeit interlinked movements."

"Tawadros' consistency has sprung from a self-imposed challenge to release one album every year, of which To Those Who Came Before Us is the 20th. Aside from his exceptional technique, it's his deep understanding of maqam that brings the magic as he gradually moves between a wide variety of modes... a brave project in its vulnerability and openheartedness."

"Tawadros may like to joke about his Aussie accent, and he may be a more flamboyant soloist than Brahem, yet there remains a core of spirituality in his playing. Thank you, maestro!
"It was an unexpectedly warm evening. I went to a concert at the Palace of Beshtek in Old Cairo — a place where the very air seems steeped in history. The performer was Joseph Tawadros, a virtuoso musician who plays the oud, an ancient Middle Eastern string instrument. Within the old walls of the palace, his music sounded especially deep and resonant. He spoke often with the audience, joking easily and wittily, switching between English and Arabic, and the hall responded again and again with laughter. Yet whenever he began to play, the mood would change. Many of the melodies felt as if they were not simply music, but something deeply personal — almost like a quiet prayer. At times it seemed he was not playing for the audience at all, but speaking through his instrument to something greater. It was a rare and beautiful evening, filled with a very special atmosphere."

Album: 'The Forgotten Path to Humanity' – SunNeverSetsOnMusic review
"Another transcendent album, featuring the trio of Tawadros with Layth Sidiq (Grammy-nominated violinist) and percussionist Elyar Pashang on handpan. The recording is a meditative exploration of empathy, tradition and sonic universality that unfolds like a spiritual odyssey."

Album review: 'The Forgotten Path to Humanity' (5 stars)
"A minimalist trio in timeless meditation - oud, violin and handpan in close communion, like a journey through ancient landscapes, rich in emotion. Tawadros frames the oud not as a revivalist symbol but as a universal voice, a melodic wanderer and emotional conduit. The violin of Layth Sidiq complements it with lyrical phrasing rooted in Arabic tradition, while Elyar Pashang's handpan offers minimalist pulses that feel both ancient and hypnotically modern."

ACO 'The Ottoman Four Seasons' US Tour – Jordan Hall, Boston
"The Australian Chamber Orchestra, under the energetic and even exuberant direction of violinist Richard Tognetti, brought a thrilling reconsideration of Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons... Joseph wore a leopard-print fez and a long maroon scarf over his black tunic... Tognetti and Joseph Tawadros were in constant musical communication."

Album: 'The Virtue of Signals' – SunNeverSetsOnMusic review
"Performed with a high degree of musicianship, evoking nostalgia and cinematic imagery, this is a moving and exhilarating set of compositions. With 8 ARIA awards under his belt, Australian oud and cello master Joseph Tawadros has found new sounds and musical territory with each release. For his 21st album, Tawadros plays is joined by two of his former collaborators: Australia’s acclaimed jazz pianist, Matt McMahon and percussion wizard James Tawadros. Rounding off the quartet is the extraordinarily sensitive improviser, Gary Daley on accordion. Featuring soulful, reflective and meditative pieces alongside more upbeat and joyful compositions, this is an album full of musical surprises and deep emotion. The Virtue of Signals features unique instrumentation and is an instrumental album – yet is accessible and appealing for a wide range of listeners. Joseph Tawadros composed these pieces for the documentary ‘A Memory Film: A Filmmaker’s diary’ (2023) directed by Jeni Thornley."

"The performance was dynamic, engaging – Tawadros sitting cross-legged, almost cradling the instrument whilst the Britten Sinfonia stood to play, virtually dancing with the music... Britten Sinfonia – Milton Court, London (FT review – Three Stages of Hindsight premiere)

Edinburgh Festival Fringe – House of Oz
"Like a cello, the instrument has an innate, dignified melancholy. Meanwhile, Tawadros crafts a note's shape and weight, along with the spaces between them, so each is more a sentence than a word... There's the player who makes the instrument spit and fizz on faster improvisations, the perfectionist who articulates his sinuous compositions with precision, and the natural clown who can't help but pile anecdote on funny anecdote between songs."

Album review — Betrayal of a Sacred Sunflower
"That Australia's chameleonic maestro of Arabic lute changes tack with his 17th album in 16 years will come as no surprise to his many admirers. Moving away from the pyrotechnical playing, Tawadros adopts a softly softly approach while still exercising his considerable chops and imagination. More meditative, mellow and melancholic than his earlier works and with heightened spatial awareness, Betrayal of a Sacred Sunflower provides listeners with a broad canvas on which to project their own thoughts and images."

Concert review — BBC Proms, Cadogan Hall
"The encore itself, from an album he recorded with banjo player Béla Fleck (Chameleons of the White Shadow), raised the energy levels with its new heights of virtuosity, lightning fingerwork and rhythmic strumming seamlessly switching between and blending bluegrass and Arabic music. A perfect conclusion to a performance that was all about challenging perceptions – of culture, identity and, of course, the oud itself."

"Tawadros may like to joke about his Aussie accent, and he may be a more flamboyant soloist than Brahem, yet there remains a core of spirituality in his playing. Album review — Live at Abbey Road
"Esoteric and largely improvised by Tawadros and his percussionist brother James, the 29-track Live at Abbey Road is one of the more innovative albums in his catalogue. He evokes the rapid-strummed resgueados of flamenco with chordal flourishes. The telepathic musical rapport shared by the brothers is evident in every duet."

Concert review — Two Blood Brothers
"Tawadros had the opulent low notes weeping and the high ones so brittle with anguish that they almost hurt. Not only do they know each other's playing inside out and share a flair for rhythmic precision, they overlap on the deeper levels of instincts for phrasing, dynamics, space, density, drama and melodic contour. Theirs is an empathy to match those between the great sitar and tabla players of Hindustani classical music."

Concert review — Only eight instruments? He's not trying hard enough
"Certainly Tawadros is not averse to showmanship (witness the pink jacket on Monday's Q&A!), but that tendency was completely overridden by his profound instinct for making music that is a mirror of truth; a bridge between his heart and mind and those of his listeners. Each time he returned to the oud he produced the finest improvisations I have heard him generate, ever: solos of thrilling intensity, spectacular beauty and unnerving emotion."

"A tour de force of an album that reaffirms composing and arranging flair and reveals his capacity to play a staggering array of instruments. Concert review — Oud to Joy (Chameleons album)

Album review — Chameleons of the White Shadow
"Gathering a veritable bucket list of musicians, 2012 ARIA award-winner Joseph Tawadros's latest release is a kaleidoscopic journey into the Middle East, with a few more surprising destinations thrown in. With the inclusion of renowned banjo player Béla Fleck, the gifted Hammond organ playing of Joey DeFrancesco and Richard Bona's bass — the result is a successful interplay, and often joyous push-pull between elements."
Arne Sjostedt

From ancient strings, a new mood for the oud
"The origins of the oud lie in the ancient Arabic world but the music Joseph Tawadros conjures from it is forging a new music frontier. The virtuoso Sydney musician has transformed the way the fretless, round-backed string instrument is viewed, taking it out of its traditional Middle Eastern setting and into the realms of classical music and jazz."

JT Signature Series Oud

JT Signature Oud
Joseph trying the JT Signature Oud · Veysel Sarikus
I've played on a lot of ouds and I can honestly say, it is by far the best new Arabic oud I've ever played. Veysel and I wanted to collaborate on a great sounding and well balanced oud which met the standards of any Arabic style player without breaking the budget — and I think we've achieved this.

— Joseph Tawadros

Working closely with master Turkish luthier Veysel Sarikus — through traditions passed down through luthier family lines — Joseph co-designed an instrument that combines beautiful workmanship, high quality materials and Sarikus's vision as a maker. The JT Signature Oud offers a wide range of dynamics and a sweet Arabic sound appealing to oud enthusiasts from beginners through to professional and virtuoso performers, at an accessible price.
